Is Chocolate Healthy?

Most of us have heard that dark chocolate is healthy. In fact, there are many nutrients and characteristics that are found to be good for you. We are going to explore a number of these in our Journal. We want to be clear, chocolate is delicious, but we will not market it as a "health food". If you eat chocolate in reasonable amounts, there really are some positive benefits. Please enjoy in moderation.

Let’s start with the big picture, Cacao is a fruit from which the seeds make chocolate. This is a good start as most fruits have positive characteristics. From the Mayo Clinic’s Abraham Healthy Living Center, Cocoa is a “rich source of phytonutrients, plant compounds that may have protective or health promoting properties”. Their article is a good quick summary of some benefits.

Another quick read that highlights many possible benefits of Dark Chocolate is from the Healthline website. Here, they cite numerous studies and identify 7 specific findings such as;

1. “The bioactive compounds in cocoa may improve blood flow in the arteries and cause a small but statistically significant decrease in blood pressure.”

2. “Observational studies show a drastic reduction in heart disease risk among those who consume the most chocolate”.
